Production of Transgenic Mice:
Biological Fundamentals and Practical Execution

Learning Objectives, Form, Scope, Content and Target Audience

This two days course provides the participants with theoretical knowledge and tools for generation of gene-modified animals.

Participants of the course will learn:

- The different techniques for generation of gene-modified animals in small rodents and large animals: Conventional Transgenes, ES cell-Technology, Cre-loxP system, gene editing, and cloning

- Practical considerations for planning transgenes and gene targetings

- Practical considerations for conducting CRISPR/Cas9-mediated gene editing

- All planning steps required for generating a new gene-modified animal

- Reproductive aspects of generation of gene-modified animals

- Ethical and 3R aspects of generation and maintenance of gene-modified animals

- Nomenclature and reproducibility in the context of work with gene-modified animals

- Legal requirements of generation and maintenance of gene-modified animals.

After lectures introducing the basics in these topics participants solve practical problems typically arising during the course of a project involving generation of new gene-modified animal (internally or externally). The solutions will be discussed.

Participants of the course will be able to plan a new gene-modification with a specific scientific purpose and supervise/control the work of a transgenic facility or external service provider.

This course is addressing PhD students, post-docs and senior researchers.

Other relevant courses: Module 5E and Module 15E

Accreditation

This course is recognized as continuing education in Switzerland by the Federation of Swiss Cantonal Veterinary Officers (VSKT).

Please note that we will charge you the full fees in case of a late cancellation of the course (within 3 weeks before start of the course) or in case of absence. It is the responsibility of the participant to inform the organizer of the course about the cancellation before the deadline of 3 weeks before the course to avoid the billing of the course. To charge for cancellations is common practice by other providers, too. The new proceedings for education courses became necessary due to an increasing extent of short term cancellations in training modules.
