Introductory Course in Laboratory Animal Science:
Non Rodent Species

NEW REGISTRATION SYSTEM FOR M1 and M20

We have adapted the registration system for modules 1 and 20. You register separately for the theory (with its written examination) and for the practical part. This way you choose and know all the exact dates for your training.
As soon as your registration for the theory is validated, you will receive access to our e-learning platform to start viewing the readings at your convenience up until the date of the exam.
For more details, please refer to this explanatory document.

Explanatory notes for new registration system

Learning Objectives, Form, Scope, Content and Target Audience

The course is primarily aimed at persons conducting animal experiments with animal species other than laboratory rodents and can be attended instead of module 1. In order to fulfill the legal requirements of 40 h training and be entitled to the certificate for “Persons conducting animal experiments”, each participant is expected to attend the lectures in general theory and 3 days of training related to the species of choice.

Criteria for the Participation

Because live animals are used in this training, the participant must prove that they are going to undertake animal experiment in the near future. This is verified by our government agency. We therefore ask for the name of the study director and the license number in the registration form. It is also possible to select only the days of practical training to get official certificates of continuing education.

Accreditation

This course is recognized as basic education in Switzerland by the Federation of Swiss Cantonal Veterinary Officers (VSKT).

Conception

The duration of the whole course is 5 half days of lectures (2.5 days) and 3 days practical training corresponding to the minimum of 40 hours required by the legislation. This course corresponds to the FELASA category B course but is not accredited.
Every participant can chose the species most convenient for him or her. Days that are dedicated to a particular species may also be booked separately as continuing education days. The species-specific course parts are organized at different places and include the following:

– Biology of the species or group of species and special requirement
– Husbandry, capture, handling
– Identification, marking, fixation
– Diseases, indicators of disturbed welfare, euthanasia
– Anesthesia and analgesia
– Interventions and sampling methods
– Specific requirements concerning experimental design
– Behaviour, indicators of stress and pain
– Animal models

These contents may also be arranged as individual training in a tutorial system. The practical trainings are organized with the help of the Animal Welfare Officer of the University Zürich and the Responsible for Training and Education in Laboratory Animal Science of the ETH Zürich.

Theory Days

In the frame of the regular Module 1 courses.

Species-Specific Practical Course Part

This part will complete the acquired principles of the lectures based on the species of interest.
NB for Aquatic Animals: 2 fish days will be offered in Basel (Uni/FMI) - date to be announced.

Remark: A additional course dedicated to wild animals is organized by the Zoology Department of the University of Lausanne.

Location

In line with the LTK module 1 concept, lectures on general theory will take place in the modules 1 (in Zürich or Bern)
Training on different groups of animals can be selected according to individual needs. These trainings may take place at various locations in Switzerland and will include practical work.
