The course introduces state-of-the-art methods for the scientific assessment of animal welfare in research and on-farm settings. Participants will explore different direct and indirect measures, discuss their scientific validity and practical application, and critically evaluate their strengths and limitations.
The course consists of four interactive lectures delivered over two days, combining scientific input with practical examples, discussion, and exchange among participants.
Course Topics:
1. On-farm and direct measures
Explore approaches for assessing animal welfare directly on farms and at the individual animal level. This session covers relevant animal-based indicators, practical assessment methods, and challenges associated with collecting reliable and standardized data under real-world conditions.
2. Integrating assessments into policy and consumer information
How can scientific welfare assessments inform policy, standards, and consumer communication? This session examines the interface between animal welfare science, regulatory frameworks, decision-making, and the communication of welfare information to consumers.
3. Behavioral tracking and sensor analysis
Digital technologies provide new opportunities for continuous and objective monitoring of animal behaviour. Participants will explore approaches to behavioral tracking and the use of sensor-based technologies for assessing behaviour, health, and welfare.
4. Biomarkers and long-term/Cumulative stress indicators
This session focuses on biomarkers used to assess stress and welfare, with particular attention to indicators capable of reflecting long-term or cumulative stress. Participants will discuss the interpretation, validation, and application of these measures in animal welfare research.
