Basic Statistics for Animal Experimentation

Learning Objectives, Form, Scope, Content and Target Audience

This two days course is designed and developed to provide the participants an overview of statistical fundamental aspects that should be considered when planning and while conducting animal experimentation.

The participants will learn:
- terminology of experimental design and analysis
- the important statistical parameters to consider before an experiment
- how to design a statistically sound experiment
- how to correctly calculate the number of animals needed (sample size) in different experimental settings
- relevant aspects of reporting statistical results

-  how to plan for success.

About a quarter of the time is dedicated for hands-on group work, distributed uniformly into the sections.
The course is aimed at all animal researchers designing and conducting experiments, including study directors (SDI), resource managers (RM) and involved persons (IPI) who are willing to improve their statistical knowledge.

Criteria for the Participation

The participants must be involved in animal experimentation (as IPI, SDI, RM, Cantonal Commission, KVET, AWO, etc.).

Accreditation

This course is recognized as two days continuing education in Switzerland by the Federation of Swiss Cantonal Veterinary Officers (VSKT)
